Vasectomy as a reliable contraceptive

Find out more about a vasectomy at UROMED in Vienna - the most effective and safest method with local anesthesia for permanent male contraception using modern "no scalpel" technology.

What is a vasectomy?

Vasectomy is one of the most effective and safest methods of permanent birth control. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or sedation. The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes in total.

In the most modern vasectomy method, the so-called "without scalpel" technique, the scrotum skin and the spermatic cord sheaths are only incised and spread without the use of a surgical knife in order to gain access to the vas deferens. The vas deferens are then severed and the two ends closed in the conventional manner.

With the "mini needle" anesthesia technique that we use, a small amount of anesthetic is injected directly into the skin and into the two underlying vas deferens. This targeted administration optimizes anaesthesia and minimizes tissue damage.

This procedure is associated with comparatively few surgery-related complications such as bruising. Wound infections also occur comparatively rarely.

"Sterilization is an option that is suitable for both men and women. For men, the procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed on an outpatient basis. The advantage of this method is that it offers a permanent solution and therefore there is no need for additional contraceptives. This also saves costs in the long term. It is also a very reliable method and has no effect on sexual desire or the ability to feel sexual pleasure."

How is a vasectomy performed?

If a man has opted for this surgical procedure, the vas deferens are cut at two points and the section in between is removed. The exposed ends are both closed with a suture and cauterized using electricity (electrocoagulation). As a result, the sperm can no longer enter the seminal fluid.

The treating doctor gains access to the two vas deferens via small incisions on the right and left side of the scrotum. The procedure itself is carried out by a urologist and is easier to perform than female sterilization. The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. It usually takes about 20 minutes.

In rare cases, complications such as infections, bruising, injuries to the testicles or wound healing disorders can occur.

What is the legal situation in Austria?

In Austria, the same legal provisions apply to a vasectomy as to female sterilization. The man must have reached the age of 25 and there must be no violation of public morals. Family planning should already be completed. The consent of other persons is not mandatory. However, it is advisable to clarify this with the spouse.

Preparation and initial consultation for vasectomy

If you have completed your family planning and would like to undergo a vasectomy, then it is best to make an appointment with the UROMED UROLOGY Competence Center for an information session.

After a brief examination, we can determine whether there are any anatomical abnormalities in the genital area and whether your vas deferens are suitable for a vasectomy under local anesthesia or sedation. If you then decide to have a vasectomy, you will have a detailed consultation in which you will be informed in detail about the procedure and possible complications. The costs for the consultation are included in the surgical fee.

FAQ on vasectomy

Great team and a friendly doctor!"
"After a long discussion with my partner, we agreed to avoid the pill or hormonal contraception in general once family planning was complete and opted for a vasectomy.
