Prostate screening: recognize early, act in time
Prostate screening is one of the most important health screenings for men. Many prostate conditions—especially prostate cancer—cause no or only mild symptoms in the early stages. This is precisely why regular screening is so valuable: it allows changes to be detected early and treated in a timely manner.
At what age should screening begin?
An annual urological screening is recommended for every man starting at age 45. If prostate cancer has already been diagnosed in your father or brother, there is an increased familial risk. In this case, screening is advisable as early as age 40.
What does the screening examination involve?
Urological screening includes several coordinated examinations:
- Digital rectal exam (DRE): The prostate is palpated through the rectum to detect changes in size and texture.
- PSA level: A blood test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen—a key component in early detection.
- Ultrasound examination: A painless imaging test to assess the prostate, testicles, kidneys, and bladder.
Screening for Younger Men, Too
Younger men also benefit from regular urological examinations. Diseases of the testicles, bladder, or urethra can occur at any age. An ultrasound examination, for example, can detect testicular cancer early and help prevent future infertility.
Why preventive care is so important
The most common objection is: “But I don’t have any symptoms.” That is precisely the point—many serious conditions do not become apparent until late in their development. Those who undergo regular preventive care can identify problems at a stage where treatment is significantly easier and the chances of recovery are much better.
