One of the most common questions men ask before a vasectomy is: Can I even have one if I don’t have children? The short answer: Yes—in Austria, a vasectomy is possible even if you don’t have children, provided certain legal requirements are met.
What does the law say in Austria?
In Austria, the same legal provisions apply to vasectomies as to female sterilization. This is regulated by the Hospital Act and relevant medical guidelines. The key requirements are:
- The man must be at least 25 years old
- There must be no violation of public morality
- Consent must be voluntary and informed There is no legally prescribed minimum number of children. Men without children can undergo a vasectomy—provided they meet the criteria mentioned and have made their decision after careful consideration.
At what age is a vasectomy permitted in Austria?
The legal age limit is 25 years. This regulation exists because lawmakers want to ensure that the decision to undergo permanent contraception has been sufficiently thought through. Men under the age of 25 cannot undergo a vasectomy in Austria—regardless of whether they have children or not.
Why do men without children want a vasectomy?
The reasons are varied and deeply personal:
- A conscious decision against having children—some men know from the start that they do not want children and see the vasectomy as a logical next step
- Partnership without the desire for children — couples who have jointly decided not to have children and are looking for a permanent, hormone-free contraceptive solution
- Medical reasons — genetic disorders or health factors that would make pregnancy risky
- Life planning — men who have finalized their life plans and no longer wish to rely on hormonal or mechanical contraceptives All of these reasons are legitimate. It is not the doctor’s role to judge an adult man’s personal decision — but rather to provide him with comprehensive information.
What happens during the consultation?
During the initial consultation at UROMED, we discuss all relevant aspects of the vasectomy — the procedure, risks, alternatives, and the question of reversibility. The consultation is not a review of the decision, but rather a medical explanation.
Important to know: The consultation is included in the surgical fee of €900 — there are no additional costs for the consultation.
> “I respect the decision of every man who comes to me. My job is to fully inform him—about the procedure, the risks, and the fact that a vasectomy should be considered permanent. Whether someone has children or not plays no role in the medical feasibility.” — Priv.-Doz. DDr. Mehmet Özsoy
Can a vasectomy be reversed if I don’t have children?
A vasectomy should generally be considered a permanent decision. Reverse surgery (vasovasostomy) is possible, but success is not guaranteed. The success rate decreases the longer the time since the original vasectomy.
Men without children who are considering a vasectomy should therefore carefully consider the following question: Am I certain that I will never want children—even if my life circumstances change, after entering a new relationship, or following a loss?
We ask this question during the consultation not to test or judge you, but because we want to ensure that the decision is made consciously and with full information.
